Autumn Jewellery Courses at Flux Studios

Autumn's almost upon us, and to coincide with the new academic year we have developed the 2009 - 2010 Calendar of Jewellery Courses here at Flux studios. Courses are tailored for beginners, intermediate and advanced students, and we will be covering a range of exciting techniques over the coming year. Looking forward to seeing you soon..

A04. Intermediate and Advanced Jewellery Course
Start date:15 September 2009 (12 week course)
Study mode: Tuesday mornings, 3hrs per week
Total hours: 36 hours of workshop time
Times: 10.15am – 1.15pm
Tutor: Vicky Forrester
Course costs: £165
This course is suitable for students with intermediate and advanced jewellery making skills.
Course Aims: The course
aims to introduce and develop the practical skills we use for working
precious materials in contemporary jewellery making. Students are
encouraged to keep a sketchbook to record ideas and experiences, to
inform the design process.
Course details: This course will assist you on an
one-to-one basis, providing the tutoring, tools and equipment required
to achieve your personal objectives. You will have the opportunity to
improve existing skills, also developing new skills by exploring new
techniques. As the course progresses you can end up producing
rings, bangles and brooches, experimental jewellery, art pieces etc. In
addition, throughout these courses I introduce a new theme or technique to the group, to stimulate new ways of working.
Theme: The group focus for this term will be ‘Etching‘.
As well as experimenting with more traditional stop-out techniques we
will look at photo-etching as a means of transferring patterns or
images onto metal. As the course progresses students may wish to use
these techniques to make rings, bangles and brooches etc.

Study mode: Thursday evenings, 3hrs per week
Total hours: 36 hours of workshop time
Times: 6pm – 9pm

Course costs: £165
This course is suitable for students with basic skills in jewellery-making, as well as for beginners.
Course Aims: The course
aims to introduce and develop the practical skills we use for working
precious materials in contemporary jewellery making. Students are
encouraged to keep a sketchbook to record ideas and experiences, to
inform the design process.
Course details: Through a series of short, fun
projects you will learn how to design and make jewellery. Beginning
with cuttlefish casting you will explore casting as a method for
creating 3D forms in pewter. Subsequent projects include making a ring
or bangle using copper or gilding metal (you may also use silver if you
wish to purchase precious materials). Over the duration of the 12 week
course students will make 5 – 10 pieces of jewellery, also gaining a
firm grounding in design processes and studio experience.
As the course progresses students may wish to experiment with more
complex casting methods, also incorporating other materials (perpex,
glass, wood, found materials) in their pewter catsings to add
colour/contrast to their designs.

D01. Beginners Course in Jewellery for Southwark residents
This course is primarily for Southwark residents and is sponsored by
Southwark Council, however a limited number of places are also available to
non- residents of the borough.
Start date: 24 September 2009 (for 10 weeks)
Study mode: Thursday mornings, 3hrs per week
Times: 10.15am – 1.15pm

Course costs:
Full fee £150 non-Southwark resident.
£120 Southwark Residents
£40 Concessionary rate for Southwark Residents
Concessionary Rates for Southwark Residents apply because of support from Southwark Council
This course is suitable for students with no previous experience in jewellery-making.

SW01. Design and Make a Sterling Silver Ring with Vicky Forrester
2 day intensive course for complete beginners!
This course is primarily for Southwark residents and

Date: Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October 2009
Times: 10.30am – 4.30pm
Course costs:

This course is suitable for students with no previous experience in jewellery-making.
Course Aims: The course aims to introduce and develop the practical skills we use for working precious materials in contemporary jewellery making.
Course details: You'll
be walking home with the most precious ring on your finger at the end
of this exciting weekend! Experiment with hammering techniques, learn
how to size a ring, cut intricate patterns - You will explore a range
of approaches to texturing, shaping and forming metal, completing
several experimental rings in gilding metal, before working in sterling
silver to produce your final design.
Techniques
include: texturing of metals; ring sizing; drilling, piercing and
filing metal; silver soldering; forming; forging; polishing.
The course fee covers the cost of all materials (including silver).
FO2. Pewter Casting Workshop with Vicky Forrester
This course is primarily for Southwark
residents and is sponsored by Southwark Council, but a limited number
of places are also available to non- residents of the borough.
Study mode: 1 x Saturday morning
Date: Saturday 31 October 2009
Times: 10.30am – 1.30pm
Course costs:
Full fee £40 non Southwark resident.

These FREE Introductory family workshops aim to get children involved in making and enjoying their creativity.
Course details:
An exciting opportunity for you and your child to make fabulous objects
in metal using the cuttlefish casting technique: Design a pendant or
medal in metal. Carve it. Cast it. Drill and polish it. Wear it!
At
Flux Studios we provide a supportive environment where families /
children and their carers can actively engage with creative and craft
processes in the professional environment of an artist studio. Projects
are tailored to suit children having no prior experience, with initial
focus on free experimentation with material and technique. Students
then put their newfound experiences into producing a final piece of
jewellery or sculpture.
Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for children 6+
