Flux at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

Flux studios is pleased to be back for the  2010 Christmas bazaar at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

We’re looking forward to seeing this lovely watercolour by David Gentleman, and  I hope to find time to get in the queue for the card  signing!

This time around twelve of the Flux jewellers will be here, and between us we’ll be showing quite a diverse range of contemporary jewellery; we’ve all been working on new collections which we’re excited to preview at this event.

People often ask how we make our jewellery.. a quick glance over our hands will tell you that it’s no painless process! We all have our own preferred techniques, whether this involves forming and construction processes, lost wax casting, stone setting, enamelling, etching, or one of the many other techniques standardly used…. all require years of practice to master. At Flux Studios we like to share our knowledge, and so we also teach classes and workshops in jewellery making.

For a designer-maker, showing new work to an audience is perhaps one of the most daunting and at the same time exhilarating experiences. It’s always rewarding to show to a home audience – last year we had a fantastic response from visitors to the Christmas Bazaar, and if this is anything to go by November 18 should be a bit of a party!

Personally I’m also looking forward to snatching some precious moments to enjoy the Gallery’s wonderful painting collection; much as Wendy Ramshaw has used Picasso’s ladies as muses for her jewellery, I like to imagine re-dressing the characters that line the walls here. Poor Saint Catherine of Siena, must she forever wear that crown of thorns?  Wouldn’t you love to see her smile!

I have a piece of jewellery that’s right up her street……

Could we persuade her one night  to slip into Mary Linley’s shoes,

with that low-cut red dress, and the Venus Rose neckpiece?

Next time you visit just check to see if there’s a new kind of radiance about her!

At Flux Studios we organise jewellery exhibitions and events, we make jewellery and take on special commissions and we teach workshops and courses in jewellery making.  If you’re interested to learn more about our activities please join our newsletter
